The Importance Of A Throttle Positioning Sensor

The throttle positioning sensor is a mechanism that helps the engine determine the correct fuel mixture for the vehicle at each and every moment. It does this by determining the position of the throttle valve by means of sensors. This is achieved by means of a resistor that varies the voltage output signal to the sensor depending on the position of the valve.

Inside the TPS are a resistor and a wiper arm which is connected to the valve. As the valve moves, the wiper arm which is in contact with the resistor also moves. The movement of the wiper arm on the resistor changes the amount of resistance provided thus changing the signal voltage output.

A faulty mechanism could cause problems in the performance of the engine. This is because the sensors could be sending the wrong signals to the engine. Such inaccurate data could lead to transmission problems such as wrongly timed shifts and line pressure problems.

The potentiometer type is composed of a variable resistor. It supplies a gradually increasing amount of voltage signal as the valve gradually opens. The combination type employs elements of both the switch and potentiometer types.

There are a number of ways to determine it the TPS is faulty. If the vehicle is experiencing acceleration problems especially if it tends to hesitate or stumble during acceleration then the device may have a problem. This arises when the sensor fails to send the right message to the engine then it fails to add extra fuel leading to hesitation.

Intermittent problems are another symptom of a faulty device. A loose connection in the TPS could cause the car to idle unevenly or hesitate intermittently. Incorrect initial setting of the TPS may lead to poor initial performance of the car engine. A multimeter could be used to detect the faults in the positioning sensor.
