Your Jeep’s Computer Might Need Tuning To Get Better Gas Mileage

Cars and trucks have become much more complicated than in years past. One of the biggest differences is that most all vehicles will use a computer to control much of everything going on under the hood this is also called a Jeep computer. Many years ago when cars were much simpler and only had a carburetor most of all the fuel consumption was based on mechanical actions like the throttle and how much suction the pistons caused during their draw phase of operation.

All that has changed in recent years and it’s important to know that much of all the major operations pertaining to fuel usage, and the fuel and air mixture are carried out by computer. All major brands like a Jeep will use a powertrain control module or PCM to run most of the cars functions. Using a computer to control how much a car or truck uses fuel is necessary since just about every car on the road these days have fuel injection. Without a computer the injectors will not know how much fuel to spray into the intake.

An important factor on how well a car or Jeep performs has a lot to do with the transmission of the car. Before the invention of an automatic transmission drivers were forced to learn how to shift the gears in their cars manually. This meant that if a diver did not shift correctly then they could waste a lot of gas. Learning how to shift just right means you can make fewer trips to the gas station.

Car makers came up with a good way of making sure drivers could easily shift their cars, the automatic transmission. This method provided a driver a way of shifting gears so that a car ran more smoothly. Except that most manual transmission cars had more gears which meant more gas mileage if used correctly. For drivers that didn’t want to have to shift on their own, they were willing to give up the added fuel economy for the convenience.

In order for the automatic transmission to make more sense they car companies had to add more gears. Also, an added benefit is that with a powertrain control module they could also control when the car shifted which added more miles per gallon. Without a computer controlling the cars functions like fuel and transmission then none of this would be possible. Other benefits to adding a powertrain control module to Jeeps means that off-road enthusiasts can also adjust their engines and transmission shifting points by just changing up the software just a bit with an electronic tool they could hook to the car’s computer. It gave owners more control to fine tuning a car or Jeep to meet their driving needs.

For most cars, you can adjust certain aspects of your computer’s software to increase performance in horsepower and torque if you are in need of high performance at the track or towing a heavy load. However, you don’t need to be a racecar driver to tap in the benefits of having a powertrain control module. You can also find ways of tuning your jeep or car so that you can just simply increase the gas mileage if you just making a long trip. You might give up a little on the power or for torque but if you don’t need it then you might as well reap the rewards of getting great gas mileage.
