If You Love Tractors, Check Out These Books
There are car men. There are truck men. There are tractor men. If you fall into the third category, no doubt you enjoy reading about your favorite subject. For you, we offer a quick list of some great books about tractors.
Many people are fans of John Deere. If you wish to learn about the history of the brand and the man behind the name, consider grabbing a copy of “The John Deere Story: A Biography of Plowmakers John and Charles Deere.” John was the inventor and Charles was his marketing genius of a son. This well researched tome includes John Deere’s humble beginnings as a New England blacksmith, his journey to Illinois and the years it took to develop and market what would be the precursor of the modern plow.
Once you finish the aforementioned book, you can move on to other John Deere-themed books. Another historical piece by Randy Leffingwell is entitled “John Deere: A History of the Tractor,” or perhaps you would like a photo retrospective such as “Legendary John Deere Tractors: A Photographic History,” by Andrew Morland. Another choice might be “The John Deere Two-Cylinder Tractor Encyclopedia: The Complete Model-by-Model History.”
Andrew Morland, who wrote the aforementioned photographic look at John Deere tractors, also wrote “Legendary Farm Tractors: A Photographic History.” This 208-page hardcover contains photographs and information about modern tractors all the way back to the tractors of the 1880s. You will find a variety of manufacturers, including Ford, Farmall, Case, International Harvester, Caterpillar and, of course, John Deere. There are even obscure models, such as a Porsche coffee plantation tractor.
For a little whimsical tractor fun, consider the humorous book, “101 Uses for an Old John Deere.” The book includes illustrations or photographs of each of the 101 uses, which include everything from jungle gym to a stealth fighter to a Christmas tree. Even if you don’t own a tractor, you are sure to enjoy a laugh from this unique book, and if you do have an old tractor lying around, well, now you can put it to good use.
Bask in farming nostalgia with Michael Dregni’s book, “This Old Tractor: A Treasury of Vintage Tractors and Family Farm Memories.” There are a variety of stories about tractors, such as a farmer’s first tractor or an essay about threshing day. Some stories are humorous, others happily sentimental. You will also fine farm paintings, farming cartoons, historical photographs, old tractor ads and much more. This is a great gift idea for someone who enjoys farming, tractors and nostalgia.
